The Lucky 7

This 4th of July was a happy reunion for a mama dog and her pups!

On July 3, WCAHS received a message about a skinny bully-type female dog and her two puppies that had been dumped at a farmsite just south of Waseca. There had been a male and a third puppy that had been hit by cars before the rest of the family was captured. The male was a black and white terrier mix (possibly Jack Russell or rat terrier) and wearing the same type of collar as the female.

A WCAHS volunteer picked up the mama, Lucky, and the two boys, Chase and Chance. She took them home, gave them baths, and tucked them in for the night.
After an oatmeal and flea and tick bath
The next day, two more puppies were found in the same area. The little girls, Faith and Hope, were picked up and rejoined  their mama and brothers.

By that evening, three more matching pups were found--Courage, a boy, and his sisters, Destiny and Grace. The reunions were happy ones--Lucky knew as soon as her foster mom stepped out of the car that she was bringing the missing babies.

Lucky was in the worst condition. She weighs around 35 pounds, but should be 10-15 pounds heavier. All her energy has been used to nurse her seven surviving pups. She was wearing a collar that was wired together and hanging loosely on her starved body. We believe she and her family were dumped, rather than running loose, for a variety of reasons. (One reason being the number of surviving puppies. These pups spread out when they're on the move!) This also does not appear to be Lucky's first litter of puppies.
Seven babies require a lot of nourishment. Poor Lucky :(
Some of the puppies have something going on with their skin, perhaps mange, fungus, or maybe even just sunburn from being exposed to the hot weather we had this weekend. The family is being fed small meals several times throughout the day. Everyone, including Lucky, is eating soft food (Lucky needs the nutrients), and the pups are getting supplemented with milk replacer. Lucky is also getting an antibotic, and pepto for her tummy.

All the puppies are black with white toes, in a variety of sizes. They are all incredibly friendly! They are believed to be around 5 weeks old. Their foster mama will continue to assess their personalities and physical conditions. If you'd be interested in fostering or adopting one or more of the puppies once they are ready, send an e-mail to wcahsadoptions@gmail.com!

Our adoption fee for puppies is $200. Although they're not quite ready yet to be weaned, you can send in an application at any time, and if you're preapproved, that pup will head home with you as soon as it's able!
